Quick answer: the quietest dehumidifier I cover is the MeacoDry Arete One 12L, rated at 35–38 dB with a night mode. For a bigger or damper bedroom, the Pro Breeze OmniDry 20L is rated at 36 dB or under. On a budget, the Devola 12L is rated at 36 dB. If your bedroom is cold, read the section on desiccants first.
Bedrooms are where condensation shows up most, because two people breathing for eight hours release a surprising amount of moisture into a closed room. They are also where a noisy dehumidifier is least welcome. A low hum that is fine in the kitchen becomes very hard to ignore at 2am.
Below I explain what the decibel figures actually mean, which models are quietest on paper, and how to set one up so it does its job without keeping you awake.
What the noise figures mean
Every figure in this article is the manufacturer's stated noise level. I have not measured them myself, and brands measure in different ways and at different distances, so treat small differences (a decibel or two) as a tie. As a rough guide:
- Around 35 dB is close to a quiet library. Most people can sleep through it.
- Around 40 dB is a quiet fridge humming. Light sleepers notice it.
- 45 dB and above is clearly audible in a silent room.
Decibels are logarithmic, so 42 dB sounds noticeably louder than 36 dB, not slightly louder. The type of sound matters too: a steady fan whoosh is easier to sleep through than a compressor that clicks on and off. Night or sleep modes help by dimming the display and dropping the fan speed.
The quietest dehumidifiers for bedrooms
| Model | Noise (maker's figure) | Night mode | Type | Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MeacoDry Arete One 12L | 35–38 dB | Yes | Compressor | 151W |
| Pro Breeze OmniDry 20L | ≤36 dB | Not listed (app scheduling instead) | Compressor | ~250W |
| Devola 12L | 36 dB | Not listed | Compressor | 185W |
| Duux Bora Smart 20L | ~36 dB (night mode) | Yes | Compressor | ~260W |
| MeacoDry Arete One 20L | 38–40 dB | Yes | Compressor | 216W |
| VonHaus 12L | 39 dB | Yes (sleep mode) | Compressor | 200W |
The louder models in my line-up, the Pro Breeze 12L Compact (42 dB) and Daewoo 16L (around 42 dB), are better suited to a utility room or hallway than a bedroom.
1. MeacoDry Arete One 12L: quietest overall
The lowest noise figure in my line-up, the lowest power draw (151W, about 4p an hour) and a HEPA H13 filter, which is a bonus in a room where you spend a third of your life. It suits bedrooms in flats and 1–3 bed homes. The 2.5L tank fills quickly in a damp room, so empty it before bed. See my Arete One 12L review.
2. Pro Breeze OmniDry 20L: quiet with more capacity
Rated at 36 dB or under, with 20L of extraction, a 4L tank and app control, so you can schedule it to run in the evening and switch off before you sleep. Choose it for a large bedroom, a bedroom where you also dry washing, or a home that needs one machine to do most of the work. Read the OmniDry 20L review.
3. Devola 12L: quiet on a budget
At £119.99 at our last check, the Devola is rated at 36 dB and draws 185W. It has a humidistat (30–80%), a 12-hour timer and castor wheels for moving it between rooms. A night mode is not listed among its features, so if display lights bother you, check before you buy. More in my Devola review.
Also worth a look
The Duux Bora Smart 20L is Quiet Mark certified at about 36 dB in night mode, though owners report it is louder in Auto and Continuous modes. The Arete One 20L is a little louder than its 12L sibling but extracts far more, so it reaches your target humidity sooner and then goes quiet.
What about a cold bedroom?
Every model above is a compressor dehumidifier, and compressors lose efficiency once a room drops below about 15°C. If your bedroom is unheated or the radiator goes off overnight, a desiccant model works better, but desiccants are generally a little louder (the Meaco DD8L is rated at 41 dB). The fix is to run it for two or three hours before bed rather than all night. My best dehumidifier for a cold bedroom guide covers this in detail.
How to keep a dehumidifier quiet at night
- Run it before bed. Two or three hours in the evening with the door shut clears most of the moisture, and you can switch it off or let the timer do it.
- Set the humidistat to 50–55%. Once the room reaches that, a compressor cycles off and the room goes quiet.
- Stand it on a hard, level floor. Carpet and uneven boards can amplify vibration; a rubber mat or thick rug square helps.
- Point it away from the bed and keep it at least a metre or two away, with 20–30cm of clear space around it.
- Empty the tank first so it does not stop halfway through the night, or beep when full.
If you are wondering about safety and cost of running one all night, I cover that in can you leave a dehumidifier on overnight.
The verdict
For most bedrooms, the MeacoDry Arete One 12L is the quiet choice: the lowest noise rating, the lowest running cost and a night mode. Choose the Pro Breeze OmniDry 20L for a larger or wetter room, or the Devola 12L if price matters most. Compare all ten in my best dehumidifiers UK guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the quietest dehumidifier in the UK?
Of the ten models I cover, the MeacoDry Arete One 12L has the lowest stated noise level at 35–38 dB, followed by the Pro Breeze OmniDry 20L (36 dB or under) and the Devola 12L (36 dB). These are manufacturers' figures.
Can I sleep with a dehumidifier on?
Most people can sleep with a dehumidifier rated around 35–38 dB, especially in night mode. If you are a light sleeper, run it for a few hours before bed and set the humidistat so it switches off once the room is dry.
Are desiccant dehumidifiers quieter than compressor ones?
Not usually. Desiccant models have no compressor, but they rely on a fan and tend to be rated around 36–47 dB. The quietest bedroom models in my line-up are all compressor types.
How many decibels is a quiet dehumidifier?
Around 35–38 dB is quiet enough for most bedrooms. At 40 dB it is similar to a fridge hum, and anything above about 42 dB is better suited to a utility room or hallway.
Should a dehumidifier be on all night in a bedroom?
It does not need to be. Running it for two or three hours before bed with the door shut is usually enough to stop window condensation. If you leave it on, set the humidistat to 50–55% so it cycles off once the room is dry.
