What we do — and don’t — do
We want to be completely straight with you: we do not physically test every product we feature. Where we have not personally tested a product, our assessment is research-based — built from manufacturer specifications, verified owner feedback and reputable independent test data.
What we bring is judgement. Matthew Smart spent over 20 years in home and garden maintenance, recommending products to paying customers and seeing which ones lasted. That experience decides which specifications matter, which marketing claims to discount, and which owner complaints signal a genuine design flaw rather than bad luck.
The sources we use
- Manufacturer specifications — checked against the actual UK model, not a US or EU variant.
- Verified owner feedback — we read the critical reviews as closely as the positive ones, looking for repeated faults over months of use rather than first-week impressions.
- Independent testing — where it exists, lab data from organisations such as Which?.
- Official UK guidance — for running costs, safety and regulation we cite primary sources such as Ofgem, the NHS, the HSE, the Food Standards Agency and GOV.UK.
- Trade experience — two decades of installing, maintaining and recommending home and garden products.
What we score
Each product is assessed on five criteria. How much each one matters depends on the category — running costs dominate for a dehumidifier or hot tub, while cooking results matter most for a pizza oven.
Performance
Does it do the core job well in a real UK home? We look at the specifications that genuinely affect results — not headline figures produced under lab conditions.
Running costs
Energy use at current UK tariffs, consumables, filters, fuel and replacement parts. A cheap product that is expensive to run is not good value.
Build quality & reliability
Materials, warranty length, spare-part availability and — most tellingly — the patterns in long-term owner feedback about what fails and when.
Ease of use
Set-up, day-to-day operation, cleaning and maintenance. Features you will struggle to use are worth little.
Value for money
How all of the above compares with similarly priced alternatives available in the UK right now.
What our scores out of 10 mean

Our score is our own editorial judgement and is shown separately from Amazon’s star rating, which reflects customer reviews. The two often differ — a product can be popular without being the best value.
How often we update
Prices and availability change constantly, so we review our product listings regularly and show a “last updated” date on every review and article. When a better product launches, a product is discontinued, or new owner feedback reveals a problem, we change the scores and rankings — even if that means demoting a product that earns us commission.
